Diamond City  – Shackelford Banks 

Before the beaches of Shackelford Banks became known for their wild horses and untouched beauty, they were home to one of North Carolina’s most remarkable coastal communities. The Diamond City collection honors the resilient men, women, and families who built lives on these windswept shores and whose legacy still echoes across the Crystal Coast.

Founded in the late 1800s, Diamond City was the largest settlement on Shackelford Banks, with a population of nearly 500–700 residents at its peak. The village earned its name from the distinctive black-and-white diamond daymark painted on nearby Cape Lookout Lighthouse. Life revolved around commercial fishing, boat building, oystering, and one of the South Atlantic’s last shore-based whaling industries. The people who called Diamond City home—known as the Ca’e Bankers—were renowned for their self-reliance, craftsmanship, and deep connection to the sea.  

Everything changed after the devastating hurricanes of 1896 and 1899. Powerful storms washed away dunes, flooded freshwater wells with saltwater, and made life on the Banks nearly impossible. Rather than abandon their heritage, many families carefully moved their homes by barge to Harkers Island, Beaufort, Salter Path, and Morehead City, carrying their traditions with them. By 1902, Diamond City had become a ghost town, but its story remains one of the defining chapters of North Carolina’s maritime history.
